Be a Healthy College Student
Thursday, 24 April 2008 14:49

Let’s face it; being a college student is rough. In between labs, exams, insane professors, parties, and relationships, it’s a little difficult to keep your sanity, let alone trying to stay healthy. Here’s a 101 to eating right and generally staying healthy during your college experience.

Step 1: Water, Water Everywhere:

Before you pick up that next soda, try a bottle of water. You can’t beat it. It’s the only thing that actually quenches your thirst. Feeling a little sluggish? Try a glass of water. Dehydration drains our energy and as a college student, it’s not like you get a lot of sleep anyway. It doesn’t help if you’re dehydrated as well. So before that class that you just stayed up all night studying for, have some water to refresh those thoughts. How much should I drink? 60-80 ounces a day will do ya. That’s 3-4 20 oz. bottles per day for all you math majors out there.

Step 2: Diet and Nutrition

Cold pizza is the corner stone of every good nutrition program. Uhhh no. Ok, it’s not like you can just go into mom’s fridge and heat up some home cooking whenever you want. Let me just give you some basic tips on keeping healthy diet. Break that overnight fast with a bowl of cereal, oatmeal, grits, etc. Stay away from high sugar cereals (of course those are our favorites, but try something new). After breakfast, your meals should include a protein source(chicken, fish, tofu, etc.), a green vegetable source, and a grain(bread, rice, pasta). Any of these key components should not over power the other. Too little or too much of any of those items, creates imbalance in the body and may create ups or downs in your energy levels throughout the day. Hungry in between meals? Use nuts, seeds, and fruit to sustain yourself.

Step 3: Exercise

Let’s face it most of you are not in college to train as world class athlete. Let’s focus on the basics to keep your body, mind, and spirit in good condition. Schedule three days out of your week that you can commit to an hour of exercise, then choose your thrill, whether it’s running, lifting weights, yoga, etc. Whatever gets your blood pumped, get out there and do it. Doing this three days out of your week will keep your body in good basic health. Remember you don’t have to train like maniac to stay in good health.
